FOOTBALL.

SATURDAY’S RESULTS

Seniors

HuiMaUg) v. Tainui (p). Shannon (3) v. Koputaroa (3). Levin-W. (15) v. Kimberley (10;. Juniors. Foxton (0) v. Tokomaru (o). Tainui forfeited to Shannon. FOXTON v. TOKOMARU. The junior match, Foxton v. Tokomaru, played at Shannon on Saturday, was very interesting and closely contested, neither side being able to penetrate their opponents defence and the game ended without any being registered. Tokomaru had ihe advantage in weight but this was counterbalanced by the extra pace of the. Foxton boys. The game was mostly confined to the forwards in which department both teams are fairly strong. A special feature of the match was the excellent spirit in which it was contested, it being perhaps the friendliest that has yet been played this season. It would be difficult to pick out any of the Foxton players for special mention as they all worked hard, and if the team hangs together it should be well in the running for the championship.

The Horowhenua Union’s senior and junior competitions are at present at a very interesting stage, as in each several of the teams are well in the running. In the senior grade up until last Saturday it looked as if Tainui had a first mortgage on the Shield, but their defeat at the hands of the Hui Mai has altered matters considerably, and as a result interest in the competition is very keen. The positions of the teams are as under: —

Played. W. L. D. Pts.

At Shannon ou Saturday a match was played between teams from the Moutoa and Shannon school ls , Moutoa being assisted by six Shannon boys. The game resulted in a win for the home team by 15 points to nil.

At a meeting of the Horowhenua Rugby Union’s Management Committee last week, a letter was received from Mr J. Desmond, referee in the Weraroa-Foxton junior match, wherein he had occasion to order a player (Wi) off. the field for disputing his decisions and hooting. Evidence was given by Wi and Baku Wilson (captain of Weraroa). Both denied hooting, and Baku said that all he heard was a small boy hooting on the line. The Union decided to give Wi a severe caution. A protest on point of law was received from the Weraroa Club against a decision of the referee in their match against Foxtor, at Foxton. The matter was left over until the next meeting, which the referee will be asked to attend. W. Healey, who last year was disqualified for life, made application to have his disqualification removed, but it was refused,' and he was asked to make an application in twelve months’ time. Cobbler, of the Shannon Club, also made application, and in his evidence admitted doing wrong, and said that should he be reinstated as a player he would also be willing to make an apology to the referee through the press. The Union agreed to remove his disqualification provided that his public apology be accepted by the referee. Sydney, June 8, The New Zealand League football team opened their tour yesterday with a match against New South Wales, and after a strenuous and interesting struggle, the visitors were beaten by 17 points to 15. Thirty-five thousand people witnessed the match, and the “gate” amounted to 751. The weather was warm and bright. The Maori team were defeated at Rugby by New South Wales at Sydney yesterday by 15 points to 3. During the progress of the game Piki bad his leg broken. A game was played on the racecourse on Saturday between the local senior team and a team comprised of “old timers” etc. The present day players were too good for their, opponents and secured a fairly easy victory. A meeting of all interested in football matters will be held in Mr Perreau’s rooms at 7.30 o’clock to-night.
