THE DAIRYING INDUSTRY.
Speaking in respect to the dairying industry at the opening of the Waikato Show, last week. Mr Massey struck a note of warning as Minister for Agriculture. “ Complaints have reached me that the quality of our butter sold in the Old Country is not being kept up to the proper standard. The experts employed by the Government in the Dominion say that this is not the case. I think there is no reason why there should be any difference in the price of Danish butter as sold in England, and New Zealand butter T-there is no reason why our article should not fetch the same price, and I hope sincerly that ere long that will be the case. lam speaking under a strong sense of duty ; I have asked the reason for these complaints from people who profess to know what they are talking about, and they say that the difference between the price of Danish and New Zealand butter is due to the milking machine. I know better than that, and I also know that if the dairying is going to prosper we must have more milking machines ; but I do ask you to look after them (applause), so that justice will be done to the product for which they are responsible. I appeal to you as Minister for Agriculture, not only to produce a good article for the markets of the world, but also for home consumption. .... Butter and cheese will always command a good price in the markets of the world.”
