FOXTON TRAIN FRACAS.
A MILD PUNISHMENT.
A sequel to the disturbance that occurred on the Foxton train about three weeks ago, was heard at the Palmerston Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when an elderly native named Kia te Ra, for whom Mr Moore appeared, was charged with having behaved in a violent manner to the annoyance of passengers on the train between Jackeytown and Rangitane on May 20th. Mr Moore explained that Kia’s head was not very strong, and he could not stand liquor well. If a prohibition order was issued against him it would probably have the desired effect.
Sub-Inspector Marsack said this was the case in which a row occurred in a carriage in which there were several ladies, who had to shift to another compartment, Kia knocked a man down, and had to be dragged off him, the guard finding it necessary to use very forcible measures to separate the two men. The information was laid under section 26, subdivision D of the Railways : Act, under which the offender was liable to. two months’ imprisonment or a fine of The accused was before the court some little time ago for drunkenness. The Magistrate (Mr J. W. Poynton) after making enquiries as to Kia’s dependents, said he would treat him leniently this time on' account of his family. He would be convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon, and a prohibition order would be issued against him. He was also ordered to pay the costs of the prosecution-
