BRAKES DIDN’T HOLD.
ENGINE OVERTURNED.
Greymouth, May 28
This morning, as a Public Works train was coming down the incline from the No. 2 State mine with fourteen trucks carrying 120 tons of coal, the large 65-100 W.E. type of engine recently placed on the line failed to hold the train in spite of all the brakes being jammed on. The engine driver (Gray) and Fireman (Ford) stuck to the train until the engine reached a line with a “dead end.” They then jumped clear and escaped without injury. The engine struck the bank and turned over. Two trucks were damaged. The engine was formerly on the Rimutaka section, and requires a centre rail, which is not yet in position.
