THE ROYAL PICTURES.
Another really splendid programme of pictures will be screened at “ The Royal,” Clyde Street, to-morrow night. The star film is “On Donovan’s Division,” a thrilling drama, splendidly acted amongst lovely scenery. Donovan, who has won the heat of Kitty Carlin, the daughter of the station agent at Hillsdale, has been “fired” for Engineer Tracey on the fast run. The regular Sunday excursion train to the lake left Perrin station, half-way down the mountain, loaded with women and children, followed by the fast freight. All went well uutil the steep south grade was reached — when Tracey looked down the double reverse curve that stretched three miles below, and applied the air brakes to avoid getting too close to the other train on the grade. They failed to work. Tracey prepared to jump and desert his engine. A sudden thought—there was one chance in ten thousand, and Donovan took it. South River station was just ahead. Quickly scribbling a message on the back of an order slip, he wrapped it in his handkerchief, weighted it with a lump of coal, and heaved it through the window of the little station. In one minute that message was flashed to Hillsdale, where Kitty was at the key, and sosecs. more the brave girl had side-tracked the excursion train. Donovan runs the fast train regularly now, and at a certain crossing waves to little Mrs DonnovaU. “ The Wrecker” is another fine drama, and the programme also includes one of the most laughable comedies yet screened, entitled, “ Bringing Father Round.”
CORONATION PICTURES. Again the municipal management are putting on real good stuff in the way of films to please their patrons. “The Emerald Necklace,’' a thrilling detective star drama, is one of the best on the programme. This novelty in the way of film production depicts not a struggle between thief and detective, but thief versus thiet, for the possession of the marvellous necklace ; Picklock v. Corner ends in the total triumph of Picklock, who, by a series of ingenious contrivances, not only obtains the jewels, but receives a reward for the return ol false stones to the real owner, an actress. “Face to Face with a Leopard,” is another film full of intense excitement and real danger. What a picture actor has to face to produce these startling films is little known to the public, but often those behind the scenes hear of sad tragedies which are the result of making a thrilling film. “The Warning Hand,’’ a wonderful and startling subject, is portrayed with gripping intensity. “The Strike,” a modern drama dealing with the restlessness of the times. A particularly interesting film shows exhibitions of swimming and life? saving. Some tip-top laughter raisers will be found in “A Breach in Breeches,” “An Accidental Millionaire,” and “Simple Simon’s Hustle.” A weird film dealing with monkeys and snakes will also be shown.
