THE INDRABARAH.
Wangandi, May 19,
The tug Terawhiti arrived at Castlecliff to-night from the scene of the disaster to the Indrabarah, and proposes to sail early tomorrow if the. weather permits. At the present time the predicted gale is rising, and it is very likely that the Terawhiti will remain in port.
The Terawhiti placed a big anchor on Saturday, and yesterday placed the one which the Stormbird brought from Wellington.
The Indrabarah is described as being “alive” at high tide to-day, and the opinion was expressad that coaxing operations to-morrow night, if the weather is favourable, should be fairly successful.
The stranding of the Tyser liner Indrabarah calls to mind the wreck of the steam yacht Hyderabad, 1800 tons. This well-known vessel was built at Portland for the Rajah of Hyderabad, and was afterwards converted into a fullrigged ship of 1350 tons. Captain Charles Holmwood then had command, and whilst the ship was on a voyage from Lyttelton to Adelaide with a cargo of railway plant (broad gauge) sold by the New Zealand Government to the South Australian, she was stranded on the 14th February, 1877, about five miles south of the Mauawatu River. Attempts w ere made to get the vessel off, but she eventually became a total loss. Her plates were of exceptional thickness, and have withstood the ravages of weather and seas for over 36 years. A notable feature of the vessel was her figure-head, which was carved from Baltic pine, and represented the original owner, who took charge of the vessel prior to it falling into the hands of Captain Holmwood. This piece of statuary was saved from the wreck and now ornaments the garden of Mr Andrew Jonson, who also has the cannon and swinging tray from the cabin.
