JAPANESE FAIR.
The Japanese Fair, under the auspices of All Saints’ Church, the funds from which are to be used lor renovating the interior of the churcn, was opened yesterday afternoon by Mr John Robertson, M.P. The hall presented a very pleasing appearance and the display reflected great credit on those who had the project in hand. All the assistants in the various stalls, and the members of the orchestra were attired in Japanese costumes and the building was so decorated as to give it an Oriental appearance. At the invitation of the Rev. Mr Woodward, the Mayor (Mr G. H. Stiles) introduced the member fo r the district, to whom, he said, .those responsible owed a debt of gratitude for consenting to open the function and assisting by his presence.
Mr Robertson said he appreciated the honour conferred on him by being a«ked to open the bazaar. The display reflected great credit on the committee and all connected with it, and showed the earnest and thorough manner in which those responsible had laboured. He congratulated the ladies and gentlemen on their costumes, which greatly added to the animation of the scene, and spoke in high terms of praise of the music provided by the orchestra. In declaring the fair open, he expressed the hope that all who attended would have an enjoyable time, and wished the committee .every success in the undertaking. Mr F. W. Frankland, after congratulating all connected with the function on the splendid results of their labours, asked those present to pass a hearty vote of thanks to Mr Robertson for bis kindness in coming over to pertorm the opening ceremony. He said the comniittee was indeed very grateful for bis kindness and assistance in this connection. The vote of thanks was carried by acclamation.
The attendance in the evening was very satisfactory, and good business was done at all the stalls. There were various competitions, and the music provided by the Orchestra added greatly to the enjoyment of the function. The fair will be open again tonight, when the prices of admission will be, adults 6d and children 3d.
