This match was played on the local racecourse on Saturday under anything but favourable weather conditions, rain falling during practically the whole of the match and the ball was consequently very greasy. Owing to the unavoidable absence of Mr J. Desmoud, Mr R. Smith had charge of the whistle and gave every satisfaction. Immediately after the kick-off a strong attack was set up by Koputaroa, who missed several likely chances to score by being over anxious. Finally, from some loose work, a pass was sent out to Fraser, who kicked high and followed up fast, and gathering the ball up smartly he registered a fine try for Koputaroa. T. Nepia failed with the kick. Shortly after the kick-off Foxton took play into the visitors’ line, and were within an ace of scoring on several occasions. The play now became fast and furious, first one side then the other taking turns in attacking, till at last Foxton broke through, Taumaranui falling on the ball from a loose scramble. Haeana failed with the kick. From the kick-off a good deal of kicking and loose forward play was indulged in and half time ended shortly after.
The second spell opeued up with au exchange of kicks. Reid, with the aid of Joe, took the play into the reds territory. From here, after some loose play, Reid, by a fine individual effort, dribbled the ball through the opposing backs, and scored a fine try, the kick at goal failing. Koputaroa now warmed to their work, and finding the ball too slippery to handle, indulged in long kicks and fast following up. From a scrum near the line Perry gained possession and scored Koputaroa’s second try. The kick, though a good one, tailed to rise over the bar. Play continued in mid field fast and open for some little time, but not to be denied Foxton came away with an irresistible forward rush. The ball rebounded off the goal post into Reid’s hands, who scored an easy try under the posts. Haeana failed with the kick. Kopularoa had the best of the remainder of the spell, but were unable to cross the Foxton line. The game ended : Foxton 9 —Koputaroa 6.
