ILLEGALLY ON PREMISES.

At the local Police Court this morning before Messrs Alf. Fraser and HornblowJ’s.P., James Harper and Nellie Morgan were charged by the police that, on the 6th May they were found by night without lawful escuse in an outhouse in an enclosed yard on the property of H. Hillman. Mr R. Moore, who appeared for the male defendant, stated that he had been asked by Harper to admit the offence. He stated there was no intention on the part of accused (Harper) to commit any of the offences which the Act more particularly provided for and under the circumstances he asked the Bench to deal leniently with the accused. Constable Woods stated that he was called up at i o’clock this morning by a person living in the neighbourhood who stated that the accused were creating a disturbance. Several persons living nearby also complained about the noise made- He found both accused in an outhouse on Mr Hillman’s property and placed them under arrest. They were both under the influence of liquor. Complaints had been made of persons trespassing on private property and sleeping in outhouses and there was an element of danger to such property by fire. The only objection to the male accused was his drinking habits. He believed the woman came from Shannon.

In reply to Mr Moore he considered the male accused was least to blame the other being the instigator. The female accused made a rambling statement to the Bench. The Bench pointed out that the Act provided for a term of imprisonment up to twelve mouths for the offence, but took a lenient view ot the case and sentenced each accused to seven days’ imprisonment in the Palmerston gaol..
