TERRITORIAL HOOLIGANISM.

TROUBLE AT DANNEVIRKE-

Dannevirke, April 16.

About a huu.red territorials from the On 1 camp visited Dannevirke last ir.gh on leave, and the impression they created was a very unfavourable one. They were some ot the men who bad failed to attend the stipulated number of drills during the year, and are putting in four extra drills.

Tbeir conduct in the streets early in the evening was disgraceful, Shops were invaded and searched for cigarettes. Uniformed youths paraded the streets as noisy as drunken roysterers. Women and girls were Hie objects of coarse remarks, and rue pandemonium caused was heard half a mile'away.

Two “terriers,” eating raw smoked fish, invaded a hotel, and asked for brandies and sodas, but were refused.

Going back to camp in the 8.30 train, disgraceful proceedings took place. Several carriage windows were broken. Many youths were under the influence of drink, and their over-loaded stomachs were emptied on to the carriage floors. “Their conduct,” said a guard, was worse than that of Maoris at a tangi. I shouldn’t have liked to have had the mess to clean up.” One civilian was of opinion that the men should be put in a barb wire enclosure and taught civility and manners befoie soldiering if they are going to act as they did last night. Many arrests were reported to have been made when the men returned to camp.
