A DOMINION RECORD.

TOWN CLERK EULOGISED.

At Monday night’s Council it was repotted that Tor the eleventh year in succession the Town Clerk has succeeded in collecting the whole of the rates, there not being one penny outstanding. ' The Mayor said that he believed this constituted a record for the Dominion, and he did not think the Council should let the occasion pass without expressing its appreciation of the good work of the Town Clerk. He had noticed at different times pars, in the papers to theeffect that the whole of the rates had been collected in certain boroughs ior two, three and four years in succession, and were claimed as a records, but there was no borough in New Zealand where all the rates had been collected for eleven successive years as had been done in Foxton. The record established was a fine one and spoke well for the prosperity of the borough and the efficiency of the Town Clerk. He moved that this Council places upon record its appreciation ot the record established by the Town Clerk by collecting for the eleventh year in succession, the whole of the rates. Gr Chrystall said that although the collecting of the rates tor eleven years in succession spoke well for the prosperity of the borough, there was no doubt it was the efficiency of the Town Clerk that was mainly responsible for the excellent record established. Cr Hannah did not hold with the resolution. He was of opinion that when a man was receiving a good salary he should do bis work well. Cr Speirs, who seconded the motion, 1 said that it was a common practice in business and other channels for appreciation to be shown for good services rendered, although the official in question might be well paid for his work. It was always as well to show a man that his work was appreciated. The motion on being put was carried, Cr Hannah alone dissenting. . . In connection with same the Mayor was asked to send a letter to Mr Fraser conveying the Council’s appreciation of his work.
