The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, April 12TH., 1913. SCHOOL HEATING.
The beating appliances at the local State school are totally inadequate. They consist of little stoves placed in each class room with perpendicular iron flues through the roof. The said flues above the roof have rusted and broken off. It is beyond our comprehension why the Board allowed its architect to instal such miniature draught furnaces. If on the score of economy, then we question the Board's wisdom. From the committee’s point of view they are anything but economical. They consume at least three times the quantity of fuel in a given time than is required for a grate. It may be that the red hoc upright flue radiates more heat in the room, but to make this really effective the flue should be carried across the room. This would also reduce the draught. The inadequacy of these miniature blast furnaces for heating purposes has been brought under the notice of the Board, and the Chairman of the Board said he was not in favour of them and had prohibited their installation in other schools. He also approved the erection of grates and chimneys in the class rooms. We notice that at a meeting of the Finance Committee of the Board, held on Tuesday, it was decided to instal an Unique Heater at the local school on trial. No particulars are furnished as to this apparatus, but something will need to be done to put the present flues in repair before the cold weather sets in, otherwise the children will te frozen out.
