HEMP GRADING.

DEPUTATION TO PREMIER.

Whilst the Prime Minister was at Palmerston on Tuesday, a deputation of flaxmillers waited on him in connection with matters affecting the industry, one of which was the dissatisfaction of the millers with the grades awarded of late.

Mr E. Seifert said that much dissatisfaction existed among millers at present owing to the raising of the standard of grading at a critical time, when millers had a lot of contracts on hand. He was aware that the graders denied that the standard had beeu raised, but he pointed out that the proportion of high grade hemp had been considerably smaller of late, showing that .the grades had been raised.

Mr Seifert, in reply to a remark by the Premier, considered that standard bales and hanks by which graders could judge should be provided. This would help to prevent differences in grading, which occurred too often. The case was one of urgency, as recent grading had put the millers in a desperate condition.

The Premier considered Mr Seifert’s suggestion for standard bales and hanks an excellent one, and said be would have the matter dealt with immediately.
