TRAMWAY EXTENSION.
MEETING AT MARTON
A meeting of the executive to consider the Sandon tram extension was held at Marton on Thursday morning, when there were present: Messrs J. G, Wilson and R. B. McKenzie (Manawatu), R. K. Simpson and Richardson (Rangitikei), Purnell, Brice and Collins (Chamber of Commerce), and Wilde-(Marton Borough Council). Mr E. Newman, M.P., was also present. Mr Newman pointed out that Palmerston, Feilding aud Wanganui had withdrawn opposition to the connection being made. He said the Manawatu County Council’s desire not to part with the tram would practically kill the whole scheme. If the Council would sell, the price wanted should be made known to the Minister of Railways, who, he thought, was not unfavourable to the scheme, but he required figures to show that he would be justified in giving his consent.
It was resolved that a subcommittee consisting of the chairman of the Manawatu County Council, the Mayor of Marton Borough, and Mr Purnell be appointed to forward to the Minister for Railways the information desired by him as regards probable traffic returns if the Sandon tram were linked up with the Main Trunk system; and afterwards to form a deputation to the Minister, with a view to formally asking that the desired connection be agreed to.
