TOWN HALL LIGHTING.
At last night - Council lue.-iicg a letter was read fruoi Mr W. Hawley, offering to fix the sunlight in the Town Hall for the sum of £ls and to work same for six months to the entire satisfaction of the Council or forego payment. He nfade a stipulation that the quantity and quality of the gas at the meter should be up to the usual standard. The sunlight in question has been a source of trouble ever since its installation, and Councillors appeared to be favourable to giving Mr Hawley an opportunity of fixing it, but did not like the stipulation be had made in reference to the gas. Cr Speirs moved and the Mayor seconded that Mr Hawley’s offer be accepted, provided he guarantees it will work to the entire satisfaction of the Council. On being put the motion was lost.
As some arrangements would have to be made in connection with the lighting, the present sunlight being unsatisfactory, Cr Speirs moved and Cr Chrystall seconded that the Town Clerk get prices to light up the Town Hall with electric light and instal storage batteries. Cr Adams moved an amendment, the effect of which would be that when it was necessary to light up the body of the hall the engine should be run to generate the electricity, as is done at present in connection with the picture shows. The amendment was lost, and the motion on being put was carried.
