CONSTABLE DOYLE’S DEATH.
At the Palmerston Magistrate’s 2ourt on Monday, Peter McDonald was charged with killing and slaying Constable Doyle, at Shannon. Mr J. W. Poynton, S.M., presided. . Sub-Inspector Marsack prosecuted, and Mr Cooper appeared for the defendant. The depositions taken at the inquest earlier in the afternoon were read. In answer to a question by Mr Dooper, F. W. Denton, one of the witnesses, stated that he ordered whisky to be given to Constable Doyle because he thought he was faint and required some stimulant. Accused pleaded not guilty to the charge, and reserved his defence. He was committed to the Supreme Court for trial. An application by the police to have the case heard at the Wanganui sitting of the Supreme Court next week, was refused by the Magistrate on the grounds that the time for counsel to prepare the defence would be so short as to prejudice prisoner’s case. Accused will consequently appear at the next Palmerston sitting in May,
