WOMAN BOUND AND GAGGED.

IS IT A HOAX ?

Whangarei, February 13

The police were informed last night that a woman named Marvin had been found bound and gagged in her own home.

The woman states that at eight o’clock a young man came to the door with a note for the husband, purporting to come from the superintendent of the Fire Brigade, her husband being a member of the team which lett to-day for Wanganui to take part in the demonstration. She thought it a genuine note aud asked that the husband should go to see the superintendent. Five minutes after the husband left, the woman went to her bedroom aud was there seized by two young men. A handkerchief was thrust into her mouth and money was demanded, and they said they would choke the life out of her. A heavy picture cord was placed round her throat and pulled till she was nearly strangled. She told her assailants the money was in a chest of drawers— £ll in notes and 16s in silver. Three months previously the same woman had an encounter with the same men, when £5 and jewellery were stolen. When the husband came home halt an hour later he found the wife unconscious on the floor.

' The police are reticent, leading the pjibiic to assume that they are treating the matter as a hoax.
