The Bishop of Wellington will hold a Confirmation in All Saints’ Church on Sunday, 30th March. The vicar commences the classes next week for the candidates. The Presbyterian Sunday School picnic is being held to-day at Messrs Barber’s homestead at Himatangi. Considerable damage has been done by the recent hurricane to crops and fruit orchards in the North Island. The atendance shield at the local State School this week was won by Standard IV with an average of 99 per cent. Messrs Watt Bros, coach will run to the Beach to-morrow, leaving the Triangle at 10.30 a.m. and 1.30 p-m. Return fare 2s. An elderly woman named Elizabeth Young, , died under chloroform at Dunedin Hospital yesterday, while undergoing an operation. John Elder, a dwarf, fell off a baker’s cart at M.osgiel yesterday and died on the way to the hospital. He is supposed to have sustained concussion of the brain. A severe wind storm visited this district this week. The wind blew with hurricane force on Thursday night, and rain fell during a lull. The weather to-day is perfect. A meeting of those interested in the formation of a gun club is advertised to take place in Whyte’s Hotel on Friday evening next, at H o’clock. All interested in gun sport are cordially invited to be present. , The Foxton Horticultural Society’s Autumn Show will be held in the Town Hall on March sth. The committee are sparing no efforts to make the exhibition a great success. Catalogues and supplementary schedules may be obtained by exhibitors upon application to the secretary. A Christchurch message states that the body of N. Rapson, the fourth victim of the Saltwater creek drowning tragedy three weeks ago, was found at the mouth of the Ashley river to-day. All the bodies have now been recovered. A Maori named Kakapi Wiremu Napihi, 27 years of age, a married man with four children, fell from the race train at Egraont last night and was instantaneously killed by the train. The body, which was terribly mangled, was brought back to New Plymouth. The Methodist Conference passed resolutions in favour of arbitration for the settlement of international disputes and favouring the military training scheme. The Conference re-affirmed last year’s resolution urging the Government to insert a conscience clause in the Defence Act. The services in the Presbyterian Church will be conducted tomorrow morning and evening by the minister, Rev J. M. Thomson, M.A. The story of “Pilgrim’s Progress” for the children will be continued in the morning. The service at Oroua Downs in the evening will be conducted by Mr E. H. Crabbe, of Palmerston. On Monday evening the All Saints’ Sunday School children will receive their prizes in the schoolroom at 7 o’clock. The report of the year will be read by the Superintendent, and the Vicar will present the prizes. Mr R. T. Betty will give a selection of gramaphone items. Ernest Sydney Davis, an Aucklander, in a letter to the press, suggests that the greatest tribute the people of Australia and New Zealand could pay to Mrs Scott would be to. send the Terra Nova in charge of Shackelton to Antarctica to secure the remains for burial in St, Paul’s. At this week’s meeting of the Wanganui Education Board, Mr Fraser submitted a report and estimate from the local committee for replacing the present stoves and flues at the school with grates and brick chimneys. The matter was held over till next meeting. The present method of heating the class rooms is very unsatisfactory and costh to the committee. The Chairman of the Board, who recently visited the school, condemned the stoves and said he had objected to them being placed in other schools. It is hoped, tor the children’s sake, that a grant for improved heating will be sanctioned by the Board before the winter sets in. A point as to the validity or oterwise of certain marriages was mentioned by Sir Robert Stout, Chief Justice, in His address to the Grand Jury at Palmerston this week. He was touching on the case of Hamuera Rewiti, charged with attempting to discharge a gun with intent to maim his wife, and in referring to the principle laid down by the law, that the wife was not bound to give evidence against the accused unless she was _ personally injured, he said it appeared that the parties were not properly married. They might have been married in the Mormon Church, but he was not aware of a Mormon minister being licensed to conduct marriages in this country. If such a minister had no authority to marry this couple according to our laws, then the woman was not married to the accused. Au important meeting of members of the Foxtou Defence Rifle Club will be held in the Supperroom of the Town Hall, on Monday evening next at 8 o’clock. Business will include arranging matches and competitions. AU members are urgently requested to attend.
The Ed ucation Board has applied to the Department for a grant to pay for a vehicle to carry the beach children to and from school. The grant for this purpose is 6d per head per day, with £ for £ subsidy on any sum raised locally for the purpose. It is anticipated that the children will not be conveyed!' to the school under gd per head.
