FOUND DROWNED.

When going to work yesterday morning at about 7.30 o’clock, Mr Arthur Turner, who is employed in connection with Messrs Levin and Co’s river service, saw the body of a man lying face downwards in the mud on the water edge of Messrs Levin and Co’s wharf. The police were communicated with, and Constable Sweeney had the body removed to the morgue. He identified it as that of Gordon McEwan, a man of about 45 years of age, who was for about five months and until recently employed by Messrs Natusch and Sons as clerk of' works in connection with buildings in course of erection in Main Street. The deceased, who is believed to be a single man with no relatives in New Zealand, has been employed by Messrs Natusch and Sons in various towns for a number of years. When found, there was a wound on the right side of the forehead aud the bead was considerably swollen. The only article found iu the clothes was a watch which had stopped at 12.15 o’clock. The deceased was last seen alive by Mr Percy Daniells at about 11.30 o’clock on Saturday night, when they were talking together for some time on the wharf.

An inquest is being held this afternoon.
