The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, February 4TH., 1913. HOSPITAL LEVY.
Elskwhkrk iu this issue is published a letter received by the local representative of the District Hospital aud Charitable Aid Board received from the chairman of the Board, iu which the latter makes certain suggestions which are wot thy of consideration by the Borough Council and other contributing bodies to the Board. Owing to increased demands for accommodation at the hospital, further aud permanent additions will have to be provided for the sick, medical aud nursing staff, and this will meau an increase in the levies ou local bodies. Mr Wilson suggests that local bodies should take into consideration the payment of levies out of loan moneys instead of out of revenue, which they have power to do through the Local Bodies Loans Act, under provisions of the Hospitals Act, 1909. Before Mr Wilson’s suggestion is adopted, however, a definite scheme should be submitted to the contributing bodies. What we should like to see is the whole of the old wooden portion pulled down and a two-storeyed brick or concrete structure erected with sufficient accommodation provided for years to come. Iu any case local bodies will be faced with increased calls iu the immediate future, and the point is, whether these are to be paid out of loan or revenue.
