THE SLAUGHTERMEN.
Gisborne, Feb. 3
The Sheepfarmers’ Frozen Meat Company started killing operations to-day with seven men, and more are expected during the day. No difficulty is anticipated in carrying out the work. Hastings, Feb. 2.
The number of butchers who “downed tools” at the works In Hawke’s Bay is:—Toraoana 35, Pakipaki 8, North British 18. The action of the butchers has raised considerable bitterness towards them by those engaged in other branches of the works. The latter resent the unfairness of having their employment jeopardised by those who have been earning, in some cases, treble their own wages, and who constitute only 15 per cent, ot the total number cf men employed at the works.
Wellington, Feb. 3
Mr Hally, Conciliation Commissioner, has unofficial!; been endeavouring to bring the parties in the slaughtermen’s dispute together, with a view to settlement, but so far has failed. He says the parties appear to have hardened up, and the chances of settlement along ordinary lines are not bright. He intends again approaching both sides on Wednesday, to submit certain proposals which may get over the difficulty. Mr Hally does not think there is the slightest chance pi a general strike.
