INQUIRY ASKED FOR
Auckland, Jan. 24
So far no definite announcement has been made concerning the Department’s intentions iu the case of the man Johnson, who escaped from the Auckland Mental Hospital three weeks ago. Johnson is perfectly willing to leave his hiding place and give himselt up to the authorities provided he is afforded an opportunity of proving his claim to sanity. Mrs Johnson wrote recently to the Minister asking for a thorough inquiry, and was referred to Dr. Beattie, medical superintendent at the Mental Hospital. Dr. Beattie is away on a holiday, and is not due back until February 7. Mr J. R. Luudou, solicitor for Johusou, to-day wrote to the Minister asking that a board of inquiry should be set up to inquire iuto Johnson’s case, and stating that immediately the board was so constituted Johnson would come lorward for examination.
