CLOSER SETTLEMENT AND SAND DRIFT.

The Levin Chamber of Commerce have been active in bringing under the notice of the Government the desirabilitj of closer settlement in the district and the necessity for taking steps to arrest the encroachment of drift sand on to arable lauds. At the last meeting of the chamber Mr Gardner regretted the dilatoriness of the present Government in this matter and the following resolution was carried : “That this chamber respectfully requests the Prime Minister to give some information regarding their intention in connection with the sand drifts, and land for settlement in this district, being aware that officials have visited the district to inspect same, this chamber is of the opinion that they are entitled to a report on the question.’’
