DOUBLE DROWNING FATALITY.
Christchurch, Jan. 14
A double drowning fatality occurred at New Brighton this afternoon. A married woman, named Mabel Highet. aged 32, the wife of Gibb Highet, of Christchurch, was bathing in the river Avon at Herring Bay, wheu she got out of her depth and into difficulties.. Her brother-in-law, John Highet, aged 37, who was bathing at the time, went to her assistance, but was dragged under, and both were drowned.
Mrs Highet’s two small children, aged five and three years respectively, stood watching on the bank of the river while the tragedy happened. Dragging operations were commenced shortly afterwards, when the bodies were recovered and brought to the city margue.
