UNLOADING CEMENT CARGOES.
DISPUTE AS TO RATE OF PAY. In connection with the dispute between the local waterside workers and the shipping companies in respect to the rate ot pay for unloading cement at the local port, the position is that the award, or agreement, entered into some months ago, fixed the rate of pay for unloading general cargo at is 6d per hour, and for coal at is 8d per hour. No mention is made of cement, and the shipping companies contend that it comes under the heading of general cargo, whilst the waterside workers claim that the coal rate of pay should be paid for unloading it. Since the above was in type, we have received the following letter from Mr W. E. Walker, one of the; officials of the local Watersiders’ Union: — ‘T notice an error in your edition of the 14th inst. re the Waterside Workers’ Union,' It appears to read that the men refused to handle cement at coal or cargo rates. At the conference between the employers and the Union, we were given to understand that coal rates for cement would be paid, as in the past, and those rates w® are willing to abide by.”
