CEMETERY OVERCROWDED.

revolting details

Hobart, January 14.

A revolting state of affairs was revealed at Quensborough cemetery. A grave digger who was dismissed made a statement to the Health Department and the press In which he alleged that it had been the practice for a year past to remove coffins from graves in order to permit of fresh burials. There was no room to replace the disinterred shells nor the gruesome contents, the result being that they were piled on one another on rubbish heaps, and, in some instances, burnt. On one occasion., in trying to find room for another coffin, bis pick pierced the lid oi a shell and became embedded in a skull, which it brought up from the casket. Dr Sprot, reporting to the Board of Health, says he verified many of the grave-digger’s statements, more particularly regarding the inability to replace coffins after fresh burials. He had no hesitation in saying that the method of disposing of the dead filled him with horror and amazement. It was a real danger to the public health.
