TOWN CLERK’S REPORT.

At last night’s Council meeting the Town Clerk’s monthly report was read as follows : “The roadmen have now completed tarring the footpath from Johnston Street to Main Street, also the passage alongside the town hall and firebell site. Owing to the loose nature of the ground at the west end, it absorbed a good deal of tar, but it will eventually be all the better for it. The Main Street road formation is so badly broken in places that it will be necessary to fill some of the holes with gravel before it can be tarred. I have ordered gravel from Jackeytown for this purpose, and also to make asphalt to renew the footpaths where the same were destroyed by fire. The water channels of Main Street have been cleaned out, the Triangle mown, and ruts repaired in Norbitou, Spring and Baker streets. The drain pipes crossing the Reeve Street drain have now been laid down the full width.

“I would suggest that the prices to the picture show on race night be raised to is and is 6d, or else no children’s tickets be sold, otherwise we shall not be able to find room for patrons on those nights. I may say that prices are usually raised on race nights. “I desire to bring under the notice of the Council the necessity of a strong-room, wherein to keep the minute books, rolls, valuation lists, receipt files, etc., as well as the account books of the vari.us services of the borough. Since the Council took over the gas works, and erected the Town Hall, there has been a considerable increase of books and papers, and the present safe cannot possibly contain hooks and records that should be made secure against any possible loss by fire, and that risk is always present while the above are contained in a wooden building as at present. In the event of a fire occurring, it is more than probable that borough records would be destroyed that it would be impossible to replace, and I should be wanting in my duty if I did not bring this matter under your notice.”

Discussing the suggestion of increased admission charges for race nights, Cr Adams said he considered the Council should give the patrons of the Hall the benefit of the special programme at the ordinary rates. Cr Chrystall : “We had better increase the prices, as it’s the last big haul we’ll get!’’ Cr Greig considered the suggestion of increasing the prices of admission was a good one. There would be a lot ot strangers in the town on those nights who wouldn’t care whether they paid one shilling or two shillings. The report was adopted.
