FIRE.
DWELLING AND CONTENTS
DESTROYED
At about 1.30 this morning, a fire destroyed a six-roomed dwelling and contents in Cook street, owned by Mr Brewer, and occupied by Mr F. Robinson. The outbreak started in the pantry. It appears that Mrs Robinson had been ironing with a gas iron up till about 10.30 p.m. When she retired she turned the gas off in the room, but not at the meter. Subsequently they were aroused by the cries of one of the children, and the house was then full of smoke, and the inmates escaped practically in their night attire. Nothing was saved from the building. The insurances are: on the building in the State office, and on the furniture and on the piano in the United Office.
The cause of the outbreak is a mystery. Mr Robinson has been an invalid for months past, and it is unfortunate that a further piece of misfortune lias lallen upon him. In conversation with Mrs Robinson this morning she said there was no doubt had it not been for the child awakening they would all have been suffocated.
