The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, January 7, 1913. LEVIN-GREATFORD LINK.
The Palmerston Times is perturbed about the linking up of the Main Trunk Line between Levin and Greatford, or Marion, It apparently has been hearing things touching this important national project, or it is because the Minister for Railways intends at an early date to traverse the proposed route. Our contemporary says: “Palmerstouiaus will require to watch carefully certain proposals to link up Levin and Greatford by a branch railway, which afterwards is to be made the permanent Main Trunk line. It might be worth while to institute direct euquiries at headquarters as to whether a definite promise has not been given by the Government that this work is to be undertaken. The result to Palmerstonr—and to other towns which look to Palmerston for many conveniences of any such alteration in the existing arrangements —has been too frequently stated to need further recapitulation. It would be as well, however, to obtain a direct statement from the Minister as to what the future intentions are in regard to this matter.” It is absurd for Palmerston to look at this matter from a parochial point of view, the shortening of the route will come as sure as night follows day, and had we in this district a few of the public spirited men that Palmerston possesses, the magnitude and importance of this matter would, long ago, have been in the forefront of railway construction. Palmerston’s objections about being side-tracked, etc,, is just so much flapdoodle. The connecting link will not injure Palmerston one bit, and on the other hand will benefit the whole dominion.
