REMARKABLE FIND IN SUSSEX.

Au interesting anthropological discovery is reported from Sussex recently, where a remarkable skull has been unearthed in a deep gravel pit. It represents the earliest trace of mankind in England that has yet been found.

The skull resembles the Neanderthal specimen, but belongs to a lower and more primitive type. The Neanderthal is a wildly romantic valley in Rhoiuish Prussia, where, in 1857, was found in a limestone cave the skeleton of a prehistoric man, The peculiar formation,of the skull induced several anthropologist l ? to regard it as typical of a separate race of ancient cave - dwellers. Other authorities explained the abnormality as caused by disease during the lifetime of the individual.

Taylor, in his work on “Aryans,” says; “Thecelebrated Neanderthal skull found near Dusseldorf in 1867 is less human and more Simian in character than any other skull, but is nevertheless classed by Hamy and De Quatrifages as belonging to their Canstadt type. Its precise age is doubtful, and it would be unsafe to regard it as the type of a special race, since its characteristics. .
