CRICKET.
PRESENTATION TO MR STEWART.
Upon his retirement from the secretaryship of the Foxton Cricket Club this year, after holding the position almost continuously for over 20 years, local cricketers and cricket enthusiasts considered the present was an opportune time to make Mr W. S. Stewart some small presentation as a mark of appreciation ot his long and valuable services in the interests of the game in this district. In consequence a gathering was held at the Family Hotel on Tuesday evening, when Mr Stewart was presented with a case of pipes. Mr Clemett, who made the presentation, referred to Mr Stewart’s long association with cricket in Foxton and district, and said that had it not been for his enthusiasm the game would have been dead long ago as lar as Fusion was concerned. As be had this year definitely retired from an active part in local cricket players and those connected with the club considered it was only right that they should make some recognition of the good work he had done. Mr Stewart had not confined all his energies to looking after the interests of cricket as the speaker first knew him as secretary and treasurer of the local Teuuis Club. He also took a great interest in other outside games and althrough was what is known as “a good sport.” A mau that would devote as much time and energy to sport generally as Mr Stewart had done was deserving ot some recognition and on behalf ot cricketers and cricket enthusiasts he asked Mr Stewart to accept the small presentat’.on together with their best wishes.
Messrs C, Hunt, H. Stuuell and F. D. Whibley also spoke of the excellent services in the interests of cricket that Mr Stewart had rendered.
The recipient returned thanks for the gift, saying that as he was a confirmed smoker they could not have made a more appropriate presentation or one that would be more appreciated. All the work he had done in connection with cricket had been done because he liked the “good old game,’’ and enjoyed seeing it played. He would always take a keen interest in the welfare of the Foxton Club and hoped during the present season to be present at a number of matches. His reason for relinquishing the secretaryship was not because he was losing interest in the game, but he considered that the duties could be better undertaken by a younger man. He concluded by wishing the Club a successful season and expressed the hope that the Hall Shield won last year would still remain in Foxton.
