AUCKLAND MATERNITY HOME.
ALLEGED SERIOUS CHARGES.
Auckland, Dec. 1
Representations have been made to the Premier by a deputation on the nursing and general treatment of women at St. Helen’s Maternity Home, It was stated that though the home was intended for the wives of poor men, such were often refused admittance, though others, whose husbands were earing good salaries, were admitted. Allegations were also made in regard to the conduct of the home from the nursing point of view and the desirability of a Magisterial enquiry was urged.
The Premier said that somewhat serious allegations had been made regarding the method of treatment of the women admitted to the home. Arrangements had already been made for a Magisterial enquiry. The present building was altogether unsuitable, and a new building would have to be provided as soon as possible.
