SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
The ordinary meeting of the local school committee was held on Thursday night. Present : Messrs Hornblow (chairman), Geo. Barber, Henderson, Hunt and Hussey. An apology for absence was received from Mr Frauklaud. Messrs Barber and Hunt reported that they had inspected the school levelling contract and had passed the work and had let a contract for a further strip. The sub-committee’s acliou was endorsed. It was decided, on account of the lateness of the season, to ask the contractor to bold over the balance of the work until March. The Foxtou Camera Club wrote thanking the committee for the gift of a blackboard and easel. The visitors reported having authorised certain minor repairs to the building.
The treasurer’s statement disclosed that the committee had not enough funds to meet outstanding liabilities. In this connection the chairman stated that the teaching staff had again generously offered to come to the rescue and he read a letter from the head teacher in which the latter stated that the staff would provide the first half of a concert nrogramme, and suggested Thursday, December 19th, as a most suitable date —the day before breaking up.—lt was decided to accept the head teacher’s offer with thanks and to adopt the date mentioned. The chairman was authorised to interview the Council and arrange for a picture entertainment to occupy the second half of the A special meeting of the committee to be convened to make final arrangements.
The headmaster’s report was read and stated inter alia that the average attendances for the past four weeks were: 301.7, 264.2, 301.8, 308.2 ; the average for the whole period was 293.9, out of an average roll number of 346,7 ; the present roll number is 344. The annual inspection was made by Inspector Milne on Wednesday and Thursday of last week.
The chairman and Mr Hussey were appointed visitors for the month.
The secretary was authorised to have the school piano tuned. A discussion took upon the necessity for moving in the matter of school swimming baths. Mr Hunt said he had been advised that the baths could be erected for The Chairman said he had been making enquiries re cost of construction of baths elsewhere and the likelihood of a Government subsidy. It was the opinion of those present that the public would subscribe liberally towards the object. It was decided to obtain fuller particular as to cost etc,, and report at a later meeting. Accounts were held over till next meeting.
