Mushrooms are now fairly plentiful in the country surrounding Masterton. The Christchurch City Council has referred to a committee a suggestion to establish a censorship of local picture shows. At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Nap Heta and Marlin Collins charged with failing to send their children to school were each fined ros with costs 7s. At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning before Mr A. D, Thomson S.M., a prohibition order for twelve months was granted against a local resident on the application of his wife. The following county chairmen have been elected at the statutory meetings held yesterday: Kiwitea, Mr Fowler; Oroua, Mr Bursell; Mauawatu, Mr J. G. Wilson ; Raugitikei, Mr K. K. Simpsou.

Amateurs are reminded of the meeting of the local Camera Club to be held in the Presbyterian Hall this evening,'at 8 o’clock. An address is to be delivered on “photographic plates, papers, and chemicals,’’ which will be illustrated by actual photographs selected for the purpose. The management of Madam Kirkby Lunn has selected from the Dresden Piano Company’s replete stock, a very fine small Grand piano by the famous makers, John Broadwood and Sons. Wildey was charged with having failed to keep a copy of a document printed by him and with having neglected to produce a copy when demanded by a Justice of the Peace. The document concerned was a betting card. Defendant was fined £lO and costs on each charge, the Magistrate saying he was satisfied defendant was attempting wilfully to defeat the gaming legislation. John Brennan was charged at the Magistrate’s Court yesterday with being found on the premises of the Office Hotel on Sunday, October 271 b, 1912. Accused did not appear, but sent a plea of guilty by letter. Constable Woods said that when found in the Post Office Hotel accused could give no satisfactory explanation of his presence there. The licensee, Mr Gray, said be did not see the man come in. The Magistrate inflicted a fine of ten shillings with costs, seven shillings.

A young man named William Burch wasdrowned while attempting to cross the Ruamanga river, near Papawai on Monday. The wedding will take place on Saturday of Miss R. Waller and Mr R. Mercer, at the bride’s home, at Baiuesse. The Rev. Mr Thomson, of Foxton will officiate. Josephine Kennedy was fined £5 at the Invercargill Supreme Court for stabbing a young man named Potts with a hat pin. Josephine was given two months in which to pay the fine. Messrs Donald Robertson, 1.5.0., Mr Andrew' Duncan Thomson, S.M., and Mr Robert Triggs, chief accountant Commonwealth Postmaster-General’s Dept., Melbourne, have been appointed Public Service Commissioners under the Act passed last session.

In our last issue we published a rumour to the effect that a child had been expelled from a school in the district because the mother objected to her child’s head beiug publicly examined. Mr Alf. Fraser, member of the Board, informs u« that the chairman of the Board had instructed the teacher to have the child reinstated. The New Zealand General Post Office has been officially opened at Wellington by the Hou. W. Fraser. During the course of his speech Mr Fraser gave some interesting figures in connection with the enormous expansion of postal business. In 1840 the revenue was only ,£52. In 1888 it was and last year it amounted to ,£1,087,000- He paid a tribute to the men who built up the Department, mentioning the Hon. W. B. D. Mantell, and Messrs John F. Hoggard and W. Gray and Sir Julius Vogel. The contract for the present building was let for ,£93,000, and the total cost, including the land, was ,£173,01)0,

The aftermath of the strike (says the Auckland Star’s Waihi correspondent) is now commencing to be telt. Some of the women are experiencing a return to sanity and express regret at what has occurred, They state that they were urged on to yell out “scab” and boo the workers under the assurance that victory was certain. They and some of the men also now admit that the Federation leaders never at any time had anything tangible to support their statement that victory was assured. “The whole thing is a bad mistake,” said one striker’s wife, “and I admit that we are getting a little of our own back now.”

At the Magistrate’s Court yesterday morning judgment was entered up for plaintiff in the case Coley v. Baird for the amount claimed £2 Ss, with costs ios. In the judgment summons, M. H. Walker v. Peter Peterson, judgment debtor, who did not appear, was ordered to pay £3 x6s yd forthwith iu default seven days’ imprisonment iu Palmerston prison. William Coker, another judgment debtor who did not appear was ordered to pay J. G. Hutchinson £32 17s rod forthwith iu default three weeks imprisonment in Palmerston prison, order to be suspended if instalments of £2 ros per mouth are paid. In the case R. Burnett v. Reastou Baker, judgment debtor appeared and was examined as to earnings etc., alter hearing which the Magistrate refused to make an order.
