The Manawatu Herald. Thursday, November 28, 1912. NOTES AND COMMENTS.

At Tuesday’s meeting of the Wellington Education Board a request was made by the Rector ol St. Patrick’s College, Wellington, for the board’s approval of the college as a school at which Education Board and junior national scholarships may be held. The request led to the following notice of motion being given by Mr R. Lee, chairman : “That, as this Education Board is administering a State secular system of education, aud as free places aud scholarships are awarded irrespective of religious beliefs, and iu this education district are now tenable iu two Wellington colleges (one lor boys aud one for girls), aud a technical school, and district high school, non-sectarian iu their teaching, and wholly or in part built and largely maintained by the State, this Education Board would not be justified in allowing scholarship holders to attend sectarian colleges.’’ From what we know of the feeling of the Board on this subject, there is not the slightest doubt that the chairman’s motion will be carried aud the battle will then commence between the champions of denominationalism and secularism touching scholarships in State secondary schools. The Roman Catholics are determined to fight this issue to a bitter end.

*‘lp people only knew the awful suffering which attaches to the taking of lysol they would never take it for the purpose of committing suicide.” Such was a casua remark made by the Auckland coroner at the close of a recent in-

quiry. The subject of reference was the number of cases iu which lysol had beeu used of late, either in regard to suicides or attempted suicides. The previous day a middle-aged man had been taken to the hospital suffering from lysol poisoning, and a woman, aged about 50, was charged with having attempted to commit suicide by taking the same fiery lotion- Still another lysol tragedy occurred at Grey Lynn. Sub-Inspector Hendry confirmed the remarks of the coroner with regard to the agony attaching to the use of this form of poison, and thought that people of suicidal tendencies should realise the suffering involved iu that method of bringing about their quietus.
