HORTICULTURAL SHOW.
The local Horticultural Society’s Spring Show* was brought to a conclusion on Thursday evening, when the attendance was again most satisfactory.
The points prizes were won as under: Pot plants, Mrs McCarthy ; cut blooms, Mrs A. S. Easton; vegetables, Mrs Greig ; cookery, Miss Speirs ; home industries, Mrs C. Rand ; decorative, Mrs Hillman ; fancy work, Mrs Kempster. The prizes for most points in school work were won by Kathleen Barber and Hazel Pearson, who scored an equal number of points, and Stanley Collins.
There were seven entries for the cottage garden and the judge awarded the prize to Mr P. Lumsden.
The special prize for embroidery work in silk was won by Mrs Renton.
During Thursday evening, gramaphone selections were played at intervals, and there were numerous competitions. The hat trimming competition for men created a great deal of interest and amusement.
The sheep-guessing competition was won by Miss Elsie King, whose guess was within half a pound of the correct weight. The three entries received of birds’ eggs, which are paid for at the rate of twopence per dozen have been counted, the total number being 1892, made up as follows: Darcy Robinson 1240, Arthur Thompson 408, Leslie McAlister 244. The tea rooms and sweet stall were excellently managed and the committee desire to express thanks to those in charge of same for the work done ; they also desire to thank all who in any way assisted to make the show so successful.
The financial returns are very satisfactory indeed, being a long way in advance of those of the last Spring Show, The total receipts amounted to ,£43 Os lOd, made up of door takings ,£l4 15s, tea-room £6 7s 7d, sweet stall £8 7s lid, sheep guessing £2 2s, competitions £l Is 3d, sale of buttonholes 2s 9d and entry fees £lO 4s 4d.
