FIRE AT MARION.
WHITE HART HOTEL
DESTROYED
A disastrous fire occurred at Marlon at about 3 o’clock this morning, resulting in the total destruction of the White Hart Hotel.
The building was owned by Messrs Hatrick and Gibbons, of Wanganui, and was occupied by Mr H. S- Cameron.
Splendid work was done by the fire brigade, their efforts saving the Town Hall, White Hart stables and the Assembly Rooms, The adjoining buildings, occupied by Burgess and Co., and the Marton Jockey Club were gutted, but the contents were saved. There were some sensational escapes from the hoiel. The licensee, Mr Cameron, was severely burned about the face and hands, as also was his daughter, Eva. Mr Mullooley, one of the guests, was severely cut and burned, and had to be removed to the Wanganui hospital.
Most of the accidents occurred through the victims jumping from the balcony, Mr Corkhill, manager of the Bank of New Zealand, escaped, in his night attire only, by means of a rope made of the bed clothes. Mr Scott, contractor for the sewerage works, rescued young Cameron, aged seven years, from one of the bedrooms, which was filled with smoke, the boy being found by Mr Scott lying unconscious ou the floor. The whole of the contents of the building, with the exception of a motor cycle, belonging to Dalgety and Co., were destroyed. The origin of the fire in not known.
