TOWN CLERK’S REPORT.

The Town Clerk submitted the following report on the workings of the Borough for the past mouth, at last night’s Council meeting : “The Johnston street cutting between Cook and Union streets has now been finished, fasciued and fenced. The water channels in Main Street, Union street, and Avenue have been cleaned out. The hand-rails have been fixed on the culvert at the east end of Norbiton Road. Holes have beeu repaired in Cook street, and the water lifted from Futter street. The Triangle has beeu mown and weeded. I propose to tar Main street, and the footpath in the Avenue, as soon as possible, and to level the east end of Coley street, and lay pipes across Coley street as authorised some time ago by the Public Works Committee ; this work would have been done sooner, but the metalling, and Johnston street cuttings had to be done first.

“I would recommend that the telephone be laid on the gas manager’s house, so as to save time, both in getting gas work attended to, and in continually going across with messages to the manager’s house. I would also recommend that the annual order for library books be sent to Messrs Jones and Son, of Wanganui, as usual. The Government subsidy of ,£2l 7s has to be expended belore the end of the year—this will provide 135 new books. The usual plan is to get a selection of, say, 160 or 170 books, and for the Library Committee to select from them the required number.” Referring to the portion of the report dealing with the purchase of books for the library, Cr Adams asked if it were not possible to get same from the local booksellers, instead of sending the money to Wanganui. After sonie discussion it was decided that the matter be lelt in the hands of the Town Clerk, with instructions to get the books locally if at all possible. With this exception, the report was adopted.
