MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING.
The ordinary meeting of the Manawatu County Council was held at Sanson on Tuesday. Present: Crs R. B. McKenzie (voted Uj the chair), B. Giay, W. E. B:u uer, J, Henson, H, H. Hunt, W. J. Phillips. An apology was received from the chairman, Cr J. G. Wilson, to whom leave of absence was e ranted.
The following letters were placed before the meeting and dealt with ;
From the Minister of Railways, stating that he was making inquiries to see if the Council’s request for second-hand rails to improve the Foxton-Sandon tram could be acceded to.
From Wanganui County Council, asking support to resolution that the holders of small grazing runs be granted the right to the freehold.
From the Horowhenua County Council, stating they considered the claim on their county for damage on the Shannon-Foxton road for flax carting was unreasonable, and that far greater damage had been caused by the Manawatu County traffic, but in order to avoid the expense of a Commission, they suggested a conference of both Councils, to come to some mutual agreement. From Mr George Edwards, Foxton, stating the work ot building break-winds and planting marram grass, for which was granted, was now finished. The County treasurer, Mr A. K. Drew, reported : —Bank balances : General account dr., ,£1768 16s nd ; loan occount cr., ,£4Ol ; net dr. balance, ,£1367 16s nd. Amounts available for expenditure ; Sandon riding 7s id, Mt. Stewart ,£59 is 6d, Waitohi 8s Bd, Rongotea .£309 is yd, Carnarvon 18s 6d, Kawakawa 8s 96, Awahou 7s, Whirokino ,£ll6 12s nd. The tramway manager reported that the traffic was good, and the receipts exceeded the expenditure by ,£56 x6s yd. The chief items of traffic were ; Merchandise 188 tons, manure tons, timber 35,600 feet, metal 330 yards. Fares amounted to ,£3 3s nd. The overseer reported as under :
Awahou riding.—During the past month we have put out over 200 yards of metal on the FoxtonSaudon road in this riding, near Foxton. Since the man has been taken off the Foxton beach road, the road has been cut into ruts in places, and it will be necessary to put the man back on this road to keep it in order for a time. The road machine has trimmed up several roads in this riding, and is now forming the road to Mr Ross’s mill. Tenders should be called for metalling the newly-formed portion on the Foxton-Shannon road, which will require about 350 cubic yards of metal in addition to the uncompleted contract of last year.
It was decided to take no action at present with reference to the conversion of grazing r; = to behold.
The account of Mr Edwards, for building breakwlnds, etc., was passed for payment, subject to the work being passed by the overseer.
Instructions were given the ranger not to impound stock on the County roads between the hours of 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., from Bth inst.
The chairman and clerk were asked to arrange a date to meet the Horowbenua County Council, to discuss the question of the Foxton-Shannon road.
