FLAXMILL ACCOMMODATION.
AMENDING BILL PASSED
The Hon. W. F. Massey (Prime Minister) moved the second reading of the Shearers’ and Agricultural Labourers’ Accommodation Amendment Bill in the House on Tuesday. He stated that the Bill was intended to be general in its application, although it had been drafted for the special purpose of amending the housing conditions of flaxmlll employees in the Manawatu district. Reports in regard to existing conditions under which these employees lived had been obtained from officers representing the Public Health and Labour Departments, Portions of these reports did not make pleasant reading. Mr J. Robertson (Olaki) asked that the reports mentioned by the Prime Minister should be laid on the table. He described in detail the conditions obtaining at the Manawatu fiaxruills, and stated that unless these conditions were quickly amended a virulent and widespread outbreak of typhoid might be looked for during the coming summer. Mr R. M’Callum (Wairau) said that it was very necessary to regulate the housing and living conditions of shepherds as well as ot shearers. The Bill was read a second time on the voices.
The Bill was afterwards put through its other stage and finally passed.
