The Horowhenua Cricket Associations’ Competition for the Hall Shield was commenced on Saturday when two matches were played, Foxton meeting Levin on the Park pitch, and the Training Farm playing Shannon at Weraroa. The match played on the local ground was one of the most exciting yet seen here, the Foxtou team just scoring the required number to register a win within about two minutes of the time for drawing “Rumps. Levin brought over a particularly strong team, and batting first compiled 72. Considering the state of the ground, this score was a really good one. When Foxtou went to the wickets there were only 40 minutes left for play and it looked almost an impossible task to get the necessary ruus in the time. Stiles and Bowe opened but both were bowled by Sloan without scoring. Cook, after scoring one also fell a victim to Sloan, and matters then presented a very bad appearance as far as Foxton's prospects were concerned. However, Redgrave got to work and by forceful batting saved the situation, his score reaching 58. He played a lucky innings, giving some four chances. With 9 wickets clown for 75 time was called, Foxtou thus winning by one wicket. The state of the ground was against a good display of fielding, but Foxton players acquitted themselves very well in this connection. Levin’s fielding was bad, a number of catches being missed. The following are the scores :
