RIVER IN FLOOD

SWAMPS INUNDATED,

The recent heavy rains have caused a rather severe flood in the Mauawatu river, which is at present higher than it has previously been this season.

The swamps at Moutoa, on the othei side of the river, are covered with water, and pressnt the appearance of a huge lake. The road between the bridge and Shannon is also under water, as is the lower part of the road known as Elkins’.

The banks erected along the river bank at Moutoa have kept the water off the Shannon road this side of the bridge. At half past one this afternoon, it did not appear as if the hood waters were still rising to any extent.

This flood will mean that the flaxmills in the vicinity will have to cease work at least for some days.
