JETTY AT THE HEADS.
DISCUSSION BY HARBOUR BOARD.
At yesterday’s meeting of the Foxton Harbour Board, correspondence was read from Mr Holben, on behalf of some ot the Tenants at the Beach, in couneciion with the erection of the proposed jetty. He stated that £IOO towards the cost of the work had been promised by tenants. He asked the Board to affirm the principle that a jetty is required and promise to make a start with the work as soon as a specified sum, to be collected from the tenants was handed over. He would undertake to collect this amount and also move in the direction of getting the rails required as cheap as possible, if they could not be obtained free. The Chairman staled that at the present time there did uot seem much chance of getting the rails free from the Railway Department. However, after the session closes, the Minister for Railways would be visiting Foxton and they could then approach him iu conuectiou with the matter.
Mr Nash contended that the jetty should he erected as it would be of service to all. He thought the Board should agree to erect same as the cost would not exceed £l5O. He agreed with the Chairman that it was necessary to economise as far as possible, but bethought this work should be carried out as it was really a river improvement. He moved that the Board agree to the erection of tbe jetty at a cost uot exceecing £l5O and subject to the 1 ails being supplied free ol charge, Mr Wood seconded the motion. He considered they should assist the tenants as far as possible as they had increased the value of the Board’s property by taking up sections and building.
Mr Hennessy said that Mr Holben was sanguiue that the rails could be procured lor nothing aud if so he agreed the Board should do something. However, at the present time he did not see how the Board could afford to spend much in this dflection. There was now a sand bank m the river opposite the Wol Coast Company’s wharf, wtuen would have to be dredged away aud this would swallow up a good deal of the money they had in hand. He would like to sec the matter held over until the uexl meeting, in about a week’s time, and see what success Mr Holbeu met with in connection with obtaining the rails free.
Mr Gibbs also favoured holding the matter over and this course was eventually agreed to, Mr Nash withdrawing his motion.
