AFFAIRS AT WAIHI.
Waihi, September 8
There are indications of the culmination ol the strike. The weaiy outlook for the termination of what appeared to be an interminable struggle has suddenly changed, aud the end to it cannot now be far distant.
The steady arrival in Waihi of batches of police hailing from all parts of the Dominion has created a totally different condition of affairs here and at Waikino, and has caused a marked difference iu the altitude ot the strikers. The tactics of following up enginedrivers and Arbitrationists employed at Waikino by the Waihi Company continues, but the manner of the escort is not now so irritating, nor are the victims so disturbed.
The police, both in Waihi and Waikino, are constantly iu attendance ou Arbitrationists aud eugiuedriyers when the latter are abroad, aud their action generally is having a salutan effect on the strikers. A section of the strikers are losing faith in the power ot the Federation to alter tne inevitable —the re-starting of the mines without the assistance of the iederationists. Some also have already admitted that the game is up, but defeat is not -admitted by the bulk of the strikers. POLICE FROM DUNEDIN.
On Saturday morning ten cuustables arrived iu Wellington from Dunedin, awaiting orders to proceed to Waiai if necessary. They have receive.; no instructions yet.
