SALVATION ARMY SELFDENIAL.
The Officer in command of the local Corps of the Salvation Army desires to iutorm our readers that the yearly week of Self-Denial which has become such a wellknown means of assisting the maintenance and extension of the Salvation Army will be observed this year from Saturday, October 12th to 18th.
The development of this yearly effort of the Salvation Army has been a truly lemarkable one. W uen tirst conceived by the farseeing genius of General Booth, it was practically confined to the small numbers of members of the Army in existence then, and consisted of many very noteworthy acts of denial, not only of luxuries but actual necessities, to raise funds for the work so dear to their hearts.
it is also well to remember that, with the financial effort, goes a special week of prayer. Our own town has undoubtedly benefitted, in many ways, by the presence and good work of the Army. We have not only direct evidence of the remarkable transformations in our midst, but have all felt the influence of its devotion and zeal,
Apart from the local work, the Army is one of the largest missionary organisations in heathen lauds, where it has met with a success little imagined by people who are used to different methods in the conversion of non-Christian nations.
Donations in aid of the work of the Army will be received by the Officer in charge or any of the authorised cohectory, or may be sent to the Editor, who will acknowledge receipt in the columns of this paper. We sincerely hope that there will be a liberal response to the appeal from the citizens of this town.
