WHO IS MR SHAW?

At the special meeting of the Borough Council held last week it was decided to ask Mr Shaw, manager of the Levin gas works, to report on the local gas works, and the most economical manner of vvoiking same. One councillor has reterred to Mr Shaw as a bricklayer and not a gas engineer. In fairness to Mr Shaw it is our duty to explain that he has had considerable experience in hying down and controlling works. Besides successfully laying down and managing the Levin works, he did similar work at Temuka. His credentials are of the highest. He was selected by the Levin Council out of 20 applicants, and their only regret is that they cannot afford to pay him an increased salary in order to retain his services. He has now been selected out of a number ot applicants to erect and manage municipal gas works at Dargaville and to supervise the water and drainage works. At the last meeting of the Levin Borough Council the following references to Mr Shaw were made. We publish them as they appeared in the Chronicle : “ The Mayor, alluding to Mr Shaw’s resignation, said he thought the Council should show its appreciation ol his work. The result ot his four and a half years’ labour had been most satisfactory. The works had never been better, and he could honestly say that from the first the installation had been a success. While other towns of the size of Levin had been struggling along, Levin had gone steadily ahead. Prom every point of view they could congratulate themselves on the gas system, and Levin had been very fortunate in having such an officer as Mr Shaw.

“Councillor Lancaster (Chairman ot the Lighting Committee) concurred with all that the Mayor had said, and remarked that Mr Shaw had been a splendid man lor Levin. “ Other councillors also bore testimony to Mr Shaw’s services. “ The Mayor then moved, and Councillor Lancaster seconded, the following motion, which was unanimously adopted : “ That this Council places m record its appreciation of the services rendered by Mr Shaw in his capacity as manager of the Gas Works, recognising that by his skill and ability he has assisted to place the works in a sound financial position and further, -that the Council regrets bis departure (by resignation) and wishes him every success in his new position.”
