LOCAL AND GENERAL.

A petition, containing upwards of 300 signatures has been presented to Dr. Adams asking him to re-consider his resignation to the Council, and allow himself to be nominated (or the vacancy caused by his retirement. Dr. Adams is giving the matter consideration.

The Mayor and Cr Coley and the Town Clerk visited Marton yesterday, and inspected the gas works there. Their investigations will be submitted to the Council meeting on Monday next. They also inspected the Opera House and other places of municipal interest. They were hospitably entertained by the Marton Councillors. It is only a matter of time when the Foxton butchers will abandon the hawking cart tor the delivery system as recommended by the Health Department. In lact, Mr Woodroole notifies the public elsewhere in this issue that he intends to adopt the order and delivery system right away. All meat purchased fur cash at the shop will be supplied at a reduced price, and delivered to the customer. Meat purchased from the hawking cart will be the usual price, with per pound added for booking. Mr Woodroofe is practically offering a bonus to cash purchasers. In our report in last issue of the discussion in connection with the issue of building permits, the Town Clerk was reported to have said, that in the case of the application tor a permit for the erection of a building in Clyde Street, that there was no contractor and no estimate was forthcoming. What he did say was that there was no contractor and only an estimate of the cost was supplied. The by-law dealing with the issuing of building permits implies that the application is to be made by the contractor who is to submit the contract price, together with a copy of plans and specifications. In the Whyte Street case this was done, but in the case of the proposed Clyde Street building the owner applied lor the permit and submitted only a sketch plan and an estimate oi the cost oi the work. There was no contract let, and no date mentioned as to when the work was likely to be proceeded with.
