MANAWATU COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING
The- regular meeting of the Manawatn County' Council was held at Sanson on Tuesday. Present : Crs. J. G. Wilson (Chairman), H. H. Hunt, R, B. McKenzie, W. J. Phillips, B. Gray, J. Henson, and W. E. Barber.
Correspondence was read as follows :
From Poplar Flaxmill Co., Moutoa, offering to contribute towards the cost of putting the road from the new Poplar mill in order.
From Mr R. Walden, asking for lease of road reserve, Moutoa, near Mr James Carruli’s. From Mr R. N. Speirs, Foxton, complaining that Mr Retter, of Shannon, was engaged in heavy traffic on the Shaunou-Foxton road, although he had not contributed towards the upkeep of the road.
The following alterations in the rate roll were agreed to: O. E. Austin to Joseph Rose, lots 1 to 62, etc., on plan 2~:i : [. H. kobUison ;o J, v.'ullin . se-tiou 417 and 41S, Foxtou , J. Collinson, to J. G. and R. A. Speirs, sections 427 and 428, Block iL, Foxton. Mr A. K. Drew, County Treasurer, reported as follows : The geueral account had a deblit balance at the bank of ,£4665 14s 7d, and the loan account a creuit ot ,£4OB 10s. The following sums are available for expenditure in the ridiugs as set out: Sandou ,£53 ns ?d, Mount Stewart ,£l3l 7s 6d, Waitohi 73 yd, Rougotea ,£354 19s 7d, Carnarvon ,£364 us Kawakawa ,£125 19s 6d, Avvahou ,£‘22608 6d, Whirokino ,£12433 1 id.
The i Tciisuicr brought before the Council the advisability of getting in the rales. Out of a £7770 17s 5d levied, only ,£1766 33 5d had been paid to date.
Mr Hickford, overseer, was granted ten da} s’ leave of absence. Mr Walden was granted temporary lease of reserve at Moutoa. Accounts totalling 14s 2d were passed for payment. The overseer reported as follows:
Awahou Riding.—The Foxton Beach road is settling down steady, but will require blinding in some ol the very stoney places, A good deal ot trimming a-nd breaking ol stones has been done on this road during the past month and marram grass has also been planted on an encroaching sand drift. The Noxious Weeds Inspector should be intormed of the spread of gorse on the roads throughout the county more especially in the Taikorea district. I should also like to draw attention to gorse fence cuttings left ou sides of roads. Ratepayers should be made to clear them away, especially along the tram route.
Mr A. K. Drew reported on the working of the tramway for the month of August. The traffic was satisfactory. A debit of ,£36 17s 3d was made for the mouth, but included in expenditure are the following extra items : Sleepers ,£ls, freight on same £2 5s 6d, extra coal £ 2O, extra wages £ls 19s ; total ,£53 4s 6d. The following were the chief items of traffic : Grain tons, minerals ISO tons, merchandise 138)4 tons, timber 32.200 ft, metal 470yds. The lares amounted to ,£8 19s Bd. With relereuce to the inspection of tramway held on the 20th ult. 1 beg to bring forward the follovvihg points for discussion.: Unloading Whale Tine, siding at Pukipuki road, unloading bank at Oroua Downs to be moved to siding. I have to report that the carriage is in an exceedingly bad state of repair, and would recommend that another one be procured and the old one used for emergencies.
