IKE BRICK AREA.

PREVIOUS PROPOSAL MODIFIED.

At the special meeting of the Borough Council held last night, the Special Order making a bylaw in connection with the proposed extension of the brick area, was brought forward for confirmation.

Tile area proposed included Main Street, Harbour Street, Liddell Street on east side, Hall St., Whyte Street, Clyde Street, Wharf Street, Avenue Road on south side from Main Street to Hall Street and Ravensworth Place on south side.

Cr Whibley said he took, exception to the proposal. He was opposed to the inclusion of Hall St. as it was purely a residential locality. Also, Harbour Street extended from Clyde Street to Messrs Coley and Bock’s llaxmill, and it was not reasonable to include same in the area. The ilaxmillers mi the river bank only had a yearly tenancy and it was most u.iU.r to expect them to erect uricx walls, should the present mills be destroyed by fire, on sites of which they had no security of tenure. The western portion of Ravensworth Place was proposed to be included, but the west side of Liddell Street was omitted—and this street was nearer the town than the portion of Raveusworth Place mentioned. He moved that Harbour Street, Hall Street, Lidded Street and Ravensworth

Place from Liddell Street oe omitted.

Cr ChryMull seconded the motion, saying that be considered the previous pro, usai went a little 100 far. They shouldn’t inflict hardships upon the owners of property 0.1 t.re uui.-ixifis o- rue town, as i l would be likely to retard building. He coustdered omy the chief streets should be included.

Cr Richmond agreed with the pievion.s speaker. If the previous proposal were confirmed it would mean that a number of people in the area aifected would not be able to afford to 1 e-build should they have the misfortune to be burnt out. In Palmerston the brick area included the Square only. Cr Coley : What about public buildings? He was of opinion they should have a brick area and thus give the people outside a chance to sell their land. The motion on being pul was carried, the voting being : For — Crs. Whibley, Chiyslall, Richmond and Hannah ; against —The Mayor and Crs. Coley and Speirs. Cr Speirs then moved that that portion of Mam Street south of Cook Street be also excluded, lie said there were no buildings of any consequence iu that part of the street and therefore no reason why it should be included iu the area.

Cr Coley seconded the motion and it was carried, Cr Whibley alone dissenting. The special order, as amended, was then put and carried.

This by-law' will come into force on the blh instant, the area being ; Main Street, much of Cook Sire- t, Whyte street, Clyde Street, Wharf Street and Avenue Road from Alain Street to Hall Street.
