SCULLING.

WORLD’S CHAMPIONSHIP.

Wanganui, August 24,

Rumour is again busy with the prospects of William Webb, exchampion sculler, emerging trom his retirement. A few days ago it was stated, on what seemed to be good authority, that he would issue a challenge to Barry, but Pearce, the Australian champion, forestalled him. It is believed by those “ in the know ” here, however that there is little likelihood of a race between Pearce and Barry for some time to come, especially as it is understood that negotiations are going on tor a race between the world’s champion and Durnau, the Canadian. It is now suggested that a match may probably be arranged, to take place about November, between Webb and Pearce, the winner to go Home and meet Barry. Webb is reported to be in very good fettle at present, and his friends are convinced that he can get back to his best form, and turn the tables on Pearce, who, it will be remembered, defeated him somewhat easily close on two years ago. Ottawa, August 24. E. Durnau, sculling champion of Canada, who has challenged Barry for the championship ot the world, is asking Barry to allow him ,4,300 for his expenses, and offers to forego a share in the gate money. Barry, in reply, has offered Durnau £SO towards his expenses and half the gate money.
